Muggle – It’s a Stupid Word

This week we have no question posed by our readers, instead, we will focus on one of my biggest pet peeves. I see it all the time and every time I grit my teeth to resist going through the computer and shaking some sense into the person that has caused my annoyance. What annoys me? Pagans and or witches calling those that are non-practitioners MUGGLE. Gods I hate that word!

Okay let’s break this down. The term muggle, yes it is an actual word, is defined by the dictionary as a person who is not conversant with a particular activity or skill. Let’s be honest though, we all associate the word with J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series which is a person who lacks any sort of magical ability and was not born into a magical family. The word can also be described as people who do not have any magical blood inside them. It’s the later definition and not the former that is used to define the word muggle for the Witch community.

Why does this make term make me grit my teeth? I mean that should define someone that “doesn’t” practice magick. In my honest opinion, everyone practices magick, just not the type of magick that YOU practice. Let’s break down magick with some analogies, shall we? Mind you, once again, this is my own personal belief and it may not match up to yours and that’s okay.

As I am from a family of skilled laborers, my analogies tend to be construction base, so who is ready for a house analogy? Magick is like building a house. You have the foundation of the home, any good home needs a solid foundation whether it is made of cement, brick or wood. Next you will want to build out the structure, frame it in and plop a roof on it. Witches simply take these basics things that everyone has access to and builds on top of it, making it a little bit stronger and something just for them. Notice I said EVERYONE has access to this.

What is magick? Magick put in the simplest terms in an intent/will that is sent out into the universe towards an individual’s deity. Prayer is a form or magick. Wishing via a birthday cake and candles is magick. Any wish that is made upon a split turkey wishbone, star, dandelion puff and or eyelash is a form of magick. Witches just perform structured magick. So to call someone a muggle because they don’t perform structured magick just like YOU is just an elitist bullshit phrase to make yourself feel better about what you are doing. You don’t get to be an asshole.

So please, listen to Aunty Snark and stop calling people muggles unless you are planning on using the dictionary’s definition of the word. Until next time witches.

May the brew in your cauldron never burn and your broom never splinter.
